Changing Your Smile

While some people have referred to Invisalign as a kind of “braces,” that’s not really what they are. You don’t have brackets attached to your teeth. You also don’t have a wire helping pull or push your teeth.

If you are like many patients, you want to know: how does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses a series of plastic, transparent aligners to gently push your teeth into new positions. Each set of aligners are custom-made for an individual patient.

By wearing the aligners in sequence, you will safely and gradually move your teeth into a straight alignment. At the end of your treatment, you can have a straighter and healthier smile.

When your aligners are ready, we’ll show you how to put them on and take them off. If you’ve ever worn an athletic mouthguard, you’ll know what to do. (Don’t worry, the aligners are smaller than those mouthguards.)

To get the maximum benefit from an aligner, you will need to wear it 20 to 22 per day for a couple weeks. Then, you will replace your aligner with the next one in the series.

You will continue doing this until your treatment is complete.

When your final aligner is ready to be removed, you will need to wear a retainer at least temporarily to prevent your teeth from shifting back. This is a necessary step in any orthodontic treatment.

The Advantages of Clear Aligners

The most obvious benefit is the one that you won’t see — or rather one that other people won’t see.

Since the aligners are clear and custom-fitted for your teeth, most people won’t have any idea you are wearing them. That makes them a great option for adults and teens who may feel self-conscious about wearing traditional braces.

The aligners are more comfortable than braces, too. When you put in a new aligner, you will likely notice some gentle pressure for a day or two as you get used to wearing it. However, you won’t have to worry about having your braces tightened, about metal brackets irritating the soft tissues inside your mouth, or about wires possibly breaking and poking you in the cheeks, gums, or lips.

Unlike braces, you are supposed to remove your aligners during meals. In other words, with Invisalign, you can eat anything that you want to eat throughout your treatment. (As dental professionals, we recommend you take it easy on the sweets, however.)

Having removable aligners also means that you can keep brushing and flossing as you do now. You won’t need special tools to make sure you remove food particles from between your braces and your teeth.
