Do you have a toothache that won’t seem to go away? Have you noticed extra sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures lately?

If so, you could have a cavity. But what exactly does that mean for your dental health?

At First Dental Associates, Dr. Nasrin Sadeghi and our experienced team have the knowledge and experience necessary to diagnose and treat a cavity before it becomes a bigger issue.

What Is A Dental Filling?

When you have a cavity, we will gently and carefully remove the decayed part of your tooth. A cavity is a hole in a tooth that grows larger and deeper the longer it’s left untreated. If you think you may have a cavity, make an appointment at our office as soon as possible to have the cavity treated.

To treat your cavity, we will remove the part of your tooth that has decayed, then fill in the space. We can also use fillings to repair a tooth that is cracked or broken, as well as teeth that are worn down from grinding or another dental issue.

At Galleria of Smiles, Dr. Sadeghi uses tooth-colored fillings so no one will be able to tell you’ve had any work done.

Dental Filling Procedure: What To Expect

When you come to our office for a filling, we’ll numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. This ensures you don’t feel any pain and remain more comfortable throughout the procedure.

Once we know you’re completely comfortable and the area is numb, we’ll use a special tool to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. We’ll check to make sure all the decay has been removed, then we’ll get the tooth ready for the filling.

Preparing a tooth for a filling involves cleaning the area to remove bacteria and debris. If necessary, we’ll use a special material to protect the roots of your tooth before adding the filling.

The tooth-colored filling material is applied in layers and a special light is used to harden each layer. Once all the layers have been applied, we’ll shape and adjust the material as needed to give your tooth the desired look. We’ll trim off any extra material and polish the tooth to finish.

Dental Care After A Filling

The last thing you want after getting a tooth filled is to need to have it filled again because of a lack of proper dental care. To maintain a filling, it’s essential that you practice good dental habits and take good care of your teeth.

Good dental hygiene includes brushing and flossing your teeth daily, using a fluoride toothpaste, and using an antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day.

You may notice some tooth sensitivity for the first couple weeks after your tooth is filled. This is common and usually subsides, but if it doesn’t go away, let us know.

If you notice a change in your filling, call us right away so we can take a closer look and see if a repair needs to be done.

How To Prevent Cavities

Cavities happen and you shouldn’t feel embarrassed when you visit First Dental Associates in need of a filling. However, there are many things you can do to prevent cavities and avoid the need for a filling.

First and foremost, as mentioned above, you should practice good dental habits. This includes brushing and flossing daily and after meals, as needed.

It’s also important to watch what you eat. Balance and moderation are key. Frequent snacking throughout the day, especially on starchy foods or foods high in sugar can put you at a higher risk for tooth decay.

Limit your consumption of sugary drinks, drink plenty of water, and opt for fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
